Why do religious people consider gay sex a sin?

Beyond the fact the bible says so, why IS it a sin? for what reason is it bad?
Murder… it takes a life, i understand why this is a sin.
Theft takes the hard earned property of another, i understand it.
Gay sex… doesn’t hurt anybody, does it?
You may say that it deprives humanity of breeding couples to keep the race going on… but we aren’t all gay are we and the percentage who are isn’t large enough to affect reproduction statistics.
Disease? just as prevalent in heterosexual relationships.
So what exactly is the point of homosexuality being classed as a sin? is it JUST because it says so?

The verses in the Bible that condemn it are about prostitution and abuse. Not intimacy between committed loving couples.

The bible was written in an age where tribe size was of the utmost importance. All sexual energy was directed towards filling women with babies as early and as often as possible; all other sexual behavior was criminalized.
It was a practical matter, and had nothing to do with morality. In fact, quite the contrary; homosexuality isn’t immoral – it hurts nobody. Homophobia hurts and sometimes kills – that’s what’s immoral.
Christians can’t reconcile the idea of a fair god with those barbaric laws, so they have to pretend that homosexuality is an immoral act (it isn’t), a choice (it isn’t – if you think it is, can you tell me about when you made the choice?), and unnatural (it’s not – it’s observed in many animal species).
You could argue that in today’s overpopulated world, heterosexuality should be the ‘sin’.
P.S. When the priests came to arrest Jesus, a young man who was with him dropped his linen cloth and “fled from them naked” (Mark 14:51-52). Need I say more?

The only reason anything is a sin is because it says so in the bible. Killing would not be a sin had it not been in the bible.

I’ve been round and round on this subject so I’m not going to answer much. But there is one very large error in what you way. Disease is NOT as prevelant in heterosexual relationship (In the US at least). Sadly it is true, there is a much higher percentage of homosexual men with aids than heterosexual men. It’s partially due to anal sex, seriously.
Due to the blood vessels in the anus, it’s much more likely to get AIDS from anal sex than from straight sex.
That pornstar a few years ago made headlines when he had AIDS. He passed it on to every woman he had anal with, but with none of the women he had straight sex with.
I get your points and agree mostly, but not about diseases. I learned this from multiple sources, and have found no proof against it.
edit: Marcus, there are also plenty of animals that engage in pedophilia. Are you saying that’s okay too?

Ahem, Abrahamic religions view it as a sin. My particular religion, Wicca, does not consider homosexuality a sin (we don’t have the concept of “sin”). I cannot say for sure about other branches of Paganism, but I’m sure for the most part they do not condemn it either.

For the same reason that it’s wrong to violate your car contrary to the owner’s manual. It wasn’t designed to put olive oil into the oil tank, but 10W40. Your car wasn’t designed for you to put peanut butter into the carburetor. It violates the design specs. Likewise, homosexual activity violates the design specs that God built into us. And anything that violates God or His plans or purposes, is sin.

Really, to fundies, that’s all the reason that’s needed for them. Also, many homophobias like to bring up the “gay anal sex is nasty” argument a lot. Heck, they tend to focus on that argument quite a bit. Make what you will of that.
However, not all religious people consider gay sex a sin, especially more New Age religions.

It is probably a holdover from the survival imperative. To be the dominant tribe you had to out populate your opposition, so procreation was encouraged. Now we have a population crisis and the imperative no longer applies

It is not only a sin but an abomination. True Born Again Christians accept God’s Word and live by it. And the Bible says that man shall not lay with mankind. That it is an abomination.

I do not beleive in the literal interpretation of the Bible, but for thse who do, the Bible is no less important that hearing the voice of God almighty speaking down from above!
Respect their right to believe what they want. Just tell them you have just as much right.
After all, Jesus said to the woman “go & sin no more.” only AFTER he sent a way the pharasees who would have stoned her to death.
(noticed I used the Bible instead of minimizing it? That is the best approach with those who beleive in the Bible.)

It isn’t “totally” considered a sin or else you wouldn’t hear of all these religious leaders being found to be engaging in it. If God had meant for men to only engage in sex with women why didn’t he give men square penis’ and everyone round ***holes ? Sex is a desire of the FLESH not the “spirit” and has nothing to do with “purity.” Ever since some inward idiots built religion around EVERYTHING being wrong in THEIR eyes we have all these fanatics trying to tell everyone how to live. Isn’t it time we gave them the “end of the world” scenario they all seek and got them off this planet ?

Well, analyzing it from the ancient hebrew point of view.
In the old ages, all men and women needed to make babies. Even if a man was gay, it was socially required to have a wife and try to have children with her. People died too much, you understand right?
Homosexual relations would only cause problems. Since there are no actual +’s to the act.
Sure, in other cultures in ancient times you could have both. Hell, I think even Homer had little boys. But in the hebrew culture and then which goes onto the christian culture, it is viewed not only as “nasty” but unproductive.
But nowadays….its different. People do vain things all the time. People don’t die as easily and babies arn’t needed for humanities survival.
It would be like adultery…and that one also causes problems in society. (it does, you can’t deny why it was obviously made a sin.)

I guess if you are not a Christian and therefore not going to heaven, it matters very little. This world is doomed anyway. I prefer to serve Jesus Christ and have the blessed hope of heaven. There will be no gay lifestyle there.

I don’t expect non Christians or unbelievers to understand this fact though though because TO THEM faith, Christian morals and the irrefutable truth of God’s word are regarded as foolishness
This argument will continue for a long time because it can not be resolved due to the obstacle of faith. Both sides have different view points and no amount of banter will change them.
Only God’s spirit can change a carnal heart to a spirit filled heart so sin (including homosexuality) will be treated for what it is…immoral, evil and detestable

They hide behind the Bible. I am a very strict Catholic person (and I know I am gonna get so much crap for this), but I find allot of the Bible to be a load of crap! We are taught that God is all forgiving. In 4th grade when I was about to do my First Confession, I was told that if a murderer confessed to a priest that he murdered someone, did his penance then was immediately hit by a car and died he would go to heaven. So, with that said, we are told God forgives everyone and loves all of His children equally, yet the Bible turns around and says that being gay is a sin and all of the religious nuts say that the gays are going to H***. But then to top it off, the Bible says that only God decides who goes to H***, so are they not committing a sin?
The religious nuts do not have a valid argument and when they don’t have a valid argument they hide behind the Bible. In the end, all you have to do is look to the Bible.

Actually, the Bible doesn’t state that it is a sin as we understand homosexuals, and their relationships, today. The verses commonly used against homosexuals are either talking about male prostitution in pagan worship, or pedestry (someone who corrupts young boys for sexual pleasure). A little research will show you this; however, most people do not like to do their own research and rely on what others tell them.

It isn’t a sin other than the bible. All sex outside of marriage is a sin, people like to point the finger at gays when they’ve probably having sex outside of marriage themselves.
It is classed as sin because of the design God had in mind upon creating humans. It’s not that it hurts anyone. It just isn’t what God wants his kids to do. It’s hard to do everything God wants sometimes. People struggle with obeying God’s word, not just when it comes to sex.
